Walls, Tradition, Residue, and Revelation
In the winter of 2005 I traveled with a small group of companions to the city of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Inspired by exuberant color schemes and the dramatic history resonating from beneath layers of paint
throughout the city's winding streets, I returned to San Francisco with the idea of creating a
dynamic body of paintings. Touched by this resonance, I wanted to explore the two feelings it provoked:
utter displacement yet simultaneously a strong connection to a long-standing lineage. The journey
resulted in an emotional series of paintings (though they walk the line of sculpture) made from cement,
wire mesh, wheat-paste, latex paint, staples, beer, markers, stencils, spray paint,
spit, cigarettes, and other random and unusual objects/mediums.
Though I still desire to
re-visit this work (both in the studio and in the streets of Oaxaca) I feel very strongly
about the visceral narratives, sediments, and embodied mental residue that resulted from my
initial explorations.
