EDUCATION: PRODUCTION & SONGWRITING | MURALS

One Voice, Many Cultures
Spring 2008

Students in Painting: One Voice, Many Cultures collectively planned and produced a mural which accompanied an Out of Site Carnaval float at the end of May 2008. The class began by discussing the role of art in our communities and the many ways in which the arts can affect change and uplift the people. The course allowed students to create a mural that expressed their own ideas in relationship to the wider communities they are a part of: at Out of Site, in the streets of SF, and globally through the celebration of Carnaval. From brainstorming, sketching, and writing, to painting our mural on panels and adhering them to the final float for Carnaval this class was a fully comprehensive experience guiding the students both technically and conceptually to a final mural of their own design. The final mural measured 9 by 8 feet and was viewed by over 20,000 people during San Francisco's annual Carnaval parade!

Main Questions to be Answered:

  • How do murals represent their communities? To themselves? To outsiders?
  • How do performance arts and visual arts relate?
  • How can we work respectfully with others as a collective within a larger project?
  • What are the limits of painting?
