EDUCATION: PRODUCTION & SONGWRITING | MURALS

The Truth: Hip-Hop Heartbeat
Winter 2008
Unity Lewis and BenFlowz

Students in The Booth: Hip-Hop Music and Creative Writing class formed a musical collective, created soundscapes, and in so doing represented the next generation of revolutionary expression. Together the class created a body of work based on their various experiences, and shared with the world a diverse array of cultures and personalities through a final full-length CD. This class aimed to sharpen the students songwriting craft, to give music production experience, and to sharpen performance skills through a final Out-of-Site community event. The course also addressed the conceptual topic of individual vs. community image representation. Our final product resulted in a completed CD, with packaging, and marketing materials that communicated the students' message of community building through art.

Understanding goals:

  • What is music, and what does it mean to you?
  • How can music and culture converge to build community?
  • How do you compose and create a work of revolutionary art, literature or music?
  • What is the business aspect of the music industry?
